Slips, trips and falls - nothing to joke about
A banana skin casually thrown on the floor. It sounds like the start of a joke - but it is the start of a health and safety nightmare. Slips, trips and falls are the biggest cause of accident in UK workplaces but can easily be avoided, as is detailed in the Slips, Trips and Falls DVD.
Figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that there were an estimated 10,910 accidents of this kind in 2007/08 which resulted in a major injury. Furthermore, they are consistently the most common cause of serious injury, topping the list every year since 1996.
The watchdog's data also shows that slips, trips and falls caused 26,197 injuries which required employees to take three or more days off work in 2007/08. Only manual handling accidents cause more three-day absences.
In addition, it is estimated that deaths and injuries caused by slips, trips and falls incidents cost the UK economy around £700 million last year alone.
So serious is the problem that the HSE launched a campaign to address it earlier this year. Shattered Lives looks at the dangers of slips, trips and falls in a range of sectors and how to avoid them, themes which are also covered in the Slips, Trips and Falls Photographic Booklets.
The safety drive claims that the issue is mainly of concern to those in the food retail, food and drink manufacturing, hospitality, construction, plant maintenance, education and health services industries. But in reality, all businesses must make efforts to ensure their staff can work in safety, making use of products such as the Slips, Trips and Falls Poster .
Pauline Cole, a London-based chartered physiotherapist working with the HSE, comments: "Physiotherapists often treat the consequences of slips, trips and falls, such as strains and sprains in the ankles and knees, wrist and arm fractures, and back pain. Injuries from workplaces accidents can have long-term and potentially devastating effects."
She points out that businesses have to work to identify why slip, trips and falls occur in the workplace and take steps to rectify this. The expert advises companies to ensure that floor are in a good condition, make sure workers are wearing suitable footwear and provide clear warning signs on slippery or sloping surfaces.
The HSE also claims that around half of all trips are caused by obstacles. According to the group, a large number of accidents could be avoided if businesses worked to improve their housekeeping.
Ways to do this include making sure that workplaces have a clear walkway which free of trailing wires and obstructions. In addition, employees' workstations should be examined with a view on factors such as whether they have enough storage space and if the surrounding floor is kept in a tidy order. Finally, other rooms which are used less frequently should not be neglected in these inspections.
Other suggestions for identifying risks can be discovered in the Slips, Trips and Falls DVDand the Slips, Trips and Falls Photographic Booklets.
The HSE also recommends that firms implement a clear management system to limit the dangers of slips, trips and falls. This system should involve planning work with employees to identify potential problems, providing the appropriate training and organising staff to make them responsible for certain areas of health and safety.
As we have seen, the effects of slips, trips and falls can be serious and businesses have a responsibility to protect their workers against them. While the causes of the accidents are many, they are avoidable if companies use the right products, training and systems.
Marcia Davies, HSE head of the injury reduction programme, adds: "People often view slips, trips and falls as trivial incidents, even comical, but they are no joke to those who suffer major injuries, a lifetime of disability, time off work and, in the worst cases, death."
