Director punished for asbestos removal

April 14, 2009

Director punished for asbestos removal
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is warning of the consequences of removing asbestos without holding the necessary licences.

According to the watchdog, the warning comes after a West Midlands company director was fined for removing asbestos insulation boards without the correct qualificiations.

Roger Lee Lavender, managing director of Secal Laser in Telford, was fined £6,666, in addition to being ordered to pay costs of £11,039.88, by Shrewsbury Crown Court.

Mr Lee admitted failing to make sure that asbestos removal work at his factory was undertaken by a licensed company, after he instructed two of his workers to take insulation boards from within the building.

Guy Dale, HSE inspector, said: "Mr Lavender allowed his employees to be exposed to the serious risk of inhaling a class one carcinogen that can cause mesothelioma and lung cancer."

Recently, Emma Corfield, managing director of specialist occupational health consultancy Core Surveys, told the South Wales Argus that companies need to make more effort to train their employees about asbestos facts.
