Firms fined after asbestos disposal

Firms fined after asbestos disposal
Two businesses have been fined after the illegal dumping of asbestos waste at a site near Peterborough.

According to reports by the Peterborough Evening Telegraph, the two firms were fined after mixing the asbestos waste with a mixture of aerosol cans, in conjunction with fireworks.

A number of different minerals are classified as asbestos, including tremolite, amosite and anthophyllite.

"There are strict rules as to the mixing of different materials and dumping them in landfill to ensure public and environmental safety," said Anna-Lise McDonald, the prosecution for the EA.

"An employee had written a misleading description of what was in the bag, resulting in the waste being disposed of inappropriately," she added.

The prosecution occurred after an investigation had been conducted by the EA.

When disposed of in landfill sites, asbestos should be kept in isolation.
