HSE runs asbestos training workshops

HSE runs asbestos training workshops
Construction companies in South Yorkshire and the Humber are being reminded of the importance of asbestos training.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is working with industry partners to stage asbestos training events for the region's micro and small construction businesses.

From May 5th to 29th, a series of workshops will be delivered by the watchdog and the South Yorkshire and Humber Working Well Together Group in Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster Scunthorpe, Hull and Grimsby.

Medani Close, HSE inspector, commented: "Asbestos awareness training should be given to employees who may be exposed to asbestos risks. This training helps employees to recognise asbestos and take the necessary steps to avoid exposure to it. "

He also revealed that 20 tradespeople die each week from asbestos-related conditions, with plumbers, electricians, joiners and heating and ventilation engineers being most at risk.

Earlier this month, Norwich Evening News 24 revealed that Bristol-based Mitie Property Services was fined £5,000 after pleading guilty to a breach of health and safety legislation.

The firm did not fully assess the risks of removing 13 asbestos-lined doors when carrying out work in September 2007 and failed to give the appropriate training to an employee.
