Unlicensed asbestos removal costs director GBP 36,000
September 30, 2008

A company director has been fined £36,000 after his firm removed asbestos from a shop without a license.
Robert McCart also paid costs of £4,000 and the same in compensation after his two companies, Sussex Asbestos Solutions (South East) and Sussex Asbestos Solutions, breached health and safety regulations.
The prosecution follows work his businesses performed at a shop in Eastbourne last year, removing asbestos lagging.
He held no license and did not notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of his actions.
The company left asbestos debris inside the shop and a bag containing the material outside the premises.
An inspector for the HSE, Amanda Huff, claims the transgressions were deliberate and motivated by a desire for profit.
She says: "It is essential that when any work is carried out which might potentially expose people to asbestos fibres that only competent operatives are used and the appropriate precautions are taken."
Her organisation will launch a new awareness campaign about the substance later this week called Asbestos The Hidden Killer.
