Concerns over HSE resources

Concerns over HSE resources
MPs have raised concerns about the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) ability to carry out adequate inspections in the construction industry.

A report from the Work and Pensions Select Committee has revealed that the number of full-time inspectors in the construction division has fallen to 124, the lowest figure since 2002.

The committee urged the HSE to increase the number of checks it carries out on cranes, particularly those over ten years old.

According to Building.co.uk, the report said: "We are convinced there is a correlation between inspection and safety standards. The recent 28 per cent rise in construction fatalities underlines the need for more resources."

The site also reported a call from MPs to set up a national register of cranes to document and check health and safety standards are being adhered to.

Recently, a director of Alcon Construction was charged with manslaughter after an employee fell from a building he was working on.
