Construction health and safety issues found in South London

Construction health and safety issues found in South London
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has highlighted the dangerous working practices found on building sites in south London.

Inspectors from the watchdog attended 40 sites in Wandsworth, Lambeth, Greenwich, Croydon, Bromley and Southwark and discovered problems on one-quarter, which may suggest the importance of constructionhealth and safety training.

The HSE revealed that enforcement action was taken on ten sites, with four notices being issued in Wandsworth, four in Lambeth and two in Greenwich.

Andrew Beal, the organisation's principal inspector for construction in south London, commented: "HSE does not tolerate poor safety standards on construction sites, and where lives are being put at risk we will take the necessary action to protect workers, including closing sites and undertaking prosecutions."

The group revealed that the main issues the visits concentrated on were good site order, working at height and risks of asbestos exposure.

Recently, the HSE invited designers to an event in Stoke-on-Trent on May 21st, in order to discuss how to improve safety in the construction industry.
