Derbyshire companies to receive spot checks

Derbyshire companies to receive spot checks
Businesses in Derbyshire are being warned that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to begin carrying out spot checks in a bid to combat poor welfare standards.

Firms in Derbyshire, Glossop and Chesterfield will be subject to surprise visits from the executive who will check that facilities such as ventilation, lighting and drinking water are of an acceptable standard.

HSE inspector Stuart Parry said that some employers may be unaware of their obligation to provide adequate facilities.

"Standards of poor welfare for employees and visiting workers at all types of workplaces, from building sites to factories, is unfortunately a common theme," he said.

Mr Parry added that it was particularly important to inspect employers in industries where skin contamination could cause serious health issues, to ensure they maintain high levels of hygiene in the workplace.

Inspectors have the right to enter any workplace without giving prior notice, although they can provide it should they see fit.
