Developer fined after building collapse

Developer fined after building collapse
Construction developers need to exercise better control of risks on refurbishment sites, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has said.

The watchdog highlighted the importance of protecting the safety of workers and the public after a developer was fined £10,000 for a house collapsing, which may interest those undergoing construction health and safety training.

Bukan Singh Hothi, of Glen Parva, Leicester, was also ordered to pay costs of £7,500 after pleading guilty to a charge under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 at Nottingham Crown Court.

The court case related to an incident in January 2007, when 235a Radford Road, Nottingham, collapsed while it was being refurbished by 426 Leicester Ltd, of which Mr Hothi was the director.

Cliff Seymour, HSE inspector, commented: "The collapse of the building nearly resulted in tragic consequences as one of the workers was in the building and only just managed to get out in time."

He added that the incident shows the importance of firms properly planning building, refurbishment or maintenance work to reduce the risks to their employees and members of the public.

Recently, the HSE revealed that one-quarter of construction sites in south London received enforcement notices in a spate of inspections.
