HSE issues gas safety advice
A warning has been issued to ensure gas central heating boilers are installed safely in order to ensure carbon monoxide poisoning risks are kept at a minimum.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued the warning to those who might repair or install these devices or who may be in a position to recognise flue deterioration.

A damaged flue would allow any of the potentially fatal gas generated by a boiler's inefficiency to enter the workplace or home where the device is installed with what could be lethal consequences.

The HSE's advice includes recommendations on how to recognise any warning signs, actions which should be taken if these are seen and legal requirements for companies, landlords and skilled labourers dealing with the devices.

It warns a number of these flues have been constructed inside ceiling cavities and so are inaccessible, which can prevent any checks on the pipe's integrity.

According to the organisation, 16 people died in the 2005-06 period from carbon monoxide poisoning suffered from an improperly installed or maintained gas appliance.ADNFCR-1336-ID-18810252-ADNFCR
