HSE issues warning to construction companies
January 24, 2008

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has called for construction companies to ensure safety systems are in place following an accident involving four workers.
Excelcare Developments was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay costs of £7,500 at the Central Criminal Court after the incident five years ago.
Spinal fractures, broken shoulders, fractured ribs and cuts and bruises were among the injuries suffered while one of the workers is still yet to make it back to work.
Amanda Huff, HSE Inspector said: "It is unacceptable that workers have to be seriously injured before companies realise that they have to comply with health and safety legislation."
"This incident could easily have been avoided by proper planning and by using a suitably experienced and trained workforce," she added.
Construction companies need to ensure safety systems for lifting goods are in place, floors under construction are not overloaded and safety systems need to be in place to prevent falls from heights.
According to the HSE, over 2,800 people have died from injuries they received as a result of construction work in the last 25 years.
