HSE names dates for spot checks on refurbishment sites
February 11, 2008

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced details of the dates of its spot checks on refurbishment sites in Luton, Bedford and Peterborough.
HSE inspectors are set to target the sites, which are workplaces where construction work is carried out on existing properties, on February 19th.
Peter Galsworthy, the HSE's principal inspector of construction for Bedford, Luton and Peterborough, said that the proportion of deaths on refurbishment sites is increasing across the country.
"During the blitz, inspectors will provide advice and will take robust enforcement action where there is a serious failure to comply and control the risk to those working on site," he explained.
He added that the visits are aimed at preventing "tragic deaths and the financial loss and delay arising from not taking the right precautions" in the workplace.
According to the HSE, last year one construction worker died every week in England (62 in total) and over half of those were in the refurbishment sector, where the number of deaths rose by 61 per cent.
