HSE to increase construction inspectors

April 3, 2009

HSE to increase construction inspectors
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) team which carries out inspections on the construction industry is to be increased.

In a bid to reduce the number health and safety construction incidents, the watchdog has announced it is seeking up to 30 new inspectors to join the division on a two-year basis.

The new members will be used to directly visit construction sites and will have the power to serve enforcement notices and fines.

Furthermore, the organisation recently took on almost 20 trainees to further increase the number of inspectors it has to prevent health and safety construction accidents.

Commenting on the move, Alan Ritchiem general secretary of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians, told cnplus.co.uk that the increase is welcome, but the system is less than perfect.

Mr Ritchiem told the news provider: "The new recruits will have limited powers and will only be given two year contracts. A high turnover of staff is already a major issue."

This month, the HSE will join forces with regional bodies in the north-east to educate construction firms about health and safety issues such as working at height, asbestos and manual handling.
