Firm fined GBP 50k after worker loses leg
April 14, 2009

In February 2007, David Farr, an employee of RT Trailers and Farm Buildings of Park Cottage, Frogmore, Kingsbridge, was involved in the loading and transporting of steel shuttering panels.
Mr Farr was crushed by one or more panels which fell over when he was guiding them into a trailer, which caused him serious injuries including the loss of his right leg, which may concern those considering risk assessment training..
Richard and Matthew Triggs, partners of the company, admitted a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 at Exeter Crown Court, resulting in a fine of £50,000 and costs of £10,000.
Andrew Kingscott, principal inspector with the Health and Safety Executive, commented: "This accident demonstrates the serious - and sometimes very personal life-changing - consequences of failing to assess risks and properly planning work activity."
Last week, a Mansfield-based firm was fined after two incidents caused workers to be injured while unloading tyres.
