GBP 24,000 paid over manual handling accident

A catering company is being fined after a manual handling accident left an employee injured.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is fining the firm £19,400 plus £4,845 in costs in relation to the incident.
Lincat, which produces catering equipment, admits contravening the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
The worker sustained a groin injury while he and his supervisor were moving a 96-kilo pizza oven at the site.
He had not been informed about safe ways to perform the task and Lincat had failed to conduct a suitable risk assessment, claims the HSE.
Its inspector, Dr Ian Ellison, says companies have a number of responsibilities to their workers if they expect them to perform manual handling.
He states these include informing employees of a load's weight, equipment necessary for the task and any postural constraints.
According to the HSE, musculoskeletal disorders – often brought about through unsafe manual handling – are the most common cause of workplace ill health in the UK.
