Businesses warned about fire safety

Businesses warned about fire safety
New research has revealed that UK companies may be unaware of the extent of their responsibilities when it comes to fire safety training for staff.

A new report from Norwich Union Risk Services (NURS) revealed that only 47 per cent of businesses are familiar with the Regulatory Fire Safety Order legislation.

Martin Hartley, property class specialist for NURS, believes that companies may be unaware of the different types of fire fighting equipment, such as extinguishers, and that all staff should have thorough training on their use.

"All staff should be familiar with the location of extinguishers, be able to select the correct type and operate one safely as a 'first aid' measure - in case they need to. The provision alone of fire fighting equipment is not enough," he said.

Mr Hartley said that staff need to be aware of different extinguishers so they know which one to use and when.

There are several different types of fire extinguisher including water, foam and dry powder.
