HSE to investigate fire on gas rig

HSE to investigate fire on gas rig
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to work with the police to investigate a fire which started on one of the largest gas rigs in the UK earlier this week.

Fire crews were called to Shell's Bacton gas terminal in Norfolk at 18:00 Thursday night to attend to a 'large-scale incident'.

Speaking to the Press Association, Richard Herrell from Norfolk Fire Service, said that there are inherent hazards in the petroleum industry, but his team's fire safety training came into its own.

"We've accounted for them and brought the fire under control in a very quick time. Everyone is safe and well. It has run like clockwork. We have a well- rehearsed plan between the emergency services and this has been shown to work," he said.

According to reports, 40 workers had to be evacuated from the site which 50 firefighters had to attend to.

The terminal, operated by several energy companies, houses gas processing plants and the Interconnector system feeding gas between Britain and Europe.
