Excavation fatality prompts safety call

Excavation fatality prompts safety call
A fatal accident at a site in Sheffield in 2004 has caused the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to issue a new health and safety plea.

Following the accident, caused during excavation work at a construction site, the HSE is calling upon businesses to ensure health and safety practices are correctly followed during this type of work.

The accident itself involved two members of staff, although there was only one fatality during the incident.

"This tragic incident was entirely preventable. The precautions to be taken at excavations are well known in the construction industry," said Dave Bradley, an inspector for the HSE.

"Each job needs to be properly planned to ensure that the appropriate controls are identified and provided on site," he added.

During a hearing, the responsible firm was found to have breached Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

The HSE receives its funding by from the Department for Work and Pensions.
