HSE to crack down on unsafe north-east workplaces

HSE to crack down on unsafe north-east workplaces
Safety spot checks are being carried out this week on industrial estates in Newcastle, Gateshead and North and South Tyneside.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors and local authorities are checking that landlords and owners of the estates are upholding standards such as safe vehicle routes for entry and exit, separation of pedestrians and vehicles and maintenance of road surfaces.

Graham Watson, HSE inspector, said the HSE had given Improvement Notices to landlords in Tursdale and Tanfield in Durham over transport risks.

Another factory occupier was fined over £6,000 when a vehicle collided with a car on an internal road.

Mr Watson said inspectors could give "constructive, practical advice".

The HSE held a similar health and safety crackdown in June on construction firms carrying out refurbishments in Teesside.

Work was stopped on two sites after random spot checks in February found concerns over working at height.

HSE inspector Jonathan Wills said 77 construction workers died in the UK last year, mostly in refurbishment.
