Merger of the HSE and HSC expected soon
March 19, 2008

The merger of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) is expected to take place in the next few weeks, according to the health and safety minister.
Speaking at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) 08 Conference to 800 health and safety professionals, Lord McKenzie of Luton said that the new body was set to receive £724 million over the next three years.
In his speech he emphasised that health and safety in the workplace was not about over the top risk assessments which led to banning conkers contests and pancake races.
"We are trying to get a greater appreciation of the need to manage health and safety by other professions and managers. We are trying to get it into their degrees or continuing professional development," he said.
According to the body, the emphasis of its work was to integrate health and safety training into its mainstream management training.
IOSH is Europe's leading body for health and safety professionals and has over 32,000 members worldwide, including 12,500 Chartered Safety and Health Practitioners.
