Nuclear site reaches health and safety milestone

Nuclear site reaches health and safety milestone
A nuclear site at Capenhurst near Chester has celebrated an impressive health and safety milestone.

The site, managed and operated by Sellafield on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, has reached 1,500 man hours, the equivalent of four years, without any accidents resulting in an employee having to take more than three days off.

Speaking to the Chester Standard, Ian Mason, Capenhurst's head of decommissioning, said: "This is a great achievement for the site given that we are the most advanced nuclear decommissioning programme in the UK and our day-to-day work includes large scale demolition.

The legislation allows employees rather than managers to take responsibility for safety on the shopfloor.

He attributed their standards to the site being operated "in a safety state of mind" which shows a healthy state of unease about hazards.

Capenhurst is due to become the first UK nuclear site to complete its clean-up programme, aiming for a finish in 2009.
