Firm fined GBP 20,000 after forklift accident
A firm has been fined £20,000 after an accident cost an employee her leg.

NYK Logistics will also pay costs of £5,941 after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety legislation.

Employee Lisa Ramos was struck by a reversing forklift truck while she was walking across the warehouse where she worked.

The accident was so severe her left leg had to be amputated.

Andrew Turner, the Health and Safety Executive's principal inspector for Derbyshire, claims the company's risk assessment had identified the hazard but it had not enforced its health and safety policies.

"It could have been avoided if NYK had taken a few simple measures such as… putting barriers in place to prevent pedestrian access," he claims.

According to her statement, Ms Ramos has to have 23 tablets of medication a day "just to get by".

Starting on Monday is the UK's National Fork Lift Safety Week, which aims to raise awareness of the risks the vehicles can present if used unsafely.ADNFCR-1336-ID-18788390-ADNFCR
