Investigation into contractor's death

July 16, 2008

Investigation into contractor's death
An investigation is being launched after a contract worker suffered fatal injuries while working on a railway line.

The 41-year-old man was carrying out maintenance work on the mainline south of Rugby Station on Saturday morning when he suffered serious injuries ultimately resulting in his death.

Authorities have not released any details of what took place on the line but Network Rail says it plans to carry out a full investigation to determine the circumstances which led to the contract-worker's death.

In a statement released by the company, it confirmed the injuries suffered by the man occurred while he was working on the track.

"A rail worker employed by Leda Rail was fatally injured early on Saturday just south of Rugby Station while carrying out track works," the firm announced.

Safety regulation of the rail industry is the responsibility of the Office of Rail Regulation and its remit covers both passenger and worker wellbeing.
