Child safety on farms is a top priority

Child safety on farms is a top priority
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to work in conjunction with Duchy College in Cornwall to highlight the importance of child safety on farms.

As the summer holidays approach, the HSE and the college will host two day-long events today and tomorrow in the start of a nationwide drive to raise awareness of child safety.

The first event will be targeted at primary school pupils while Friday's event will be aimed at 14 and 15-year-olds, with both focussing on safety around machinery, animals and near water.

After their visit to the college, a health and safety-themed poster competition will be held, with the winners being displayed at the Royal Cornwall Show this June.

The HSE claims that 49 children have died in farm-related accidents, with 20 of them involving machinery, over the last ten years.

Agriculture has one of the highest numbers of fatal accidents of any industry.
