Employer guidance released for dealing with an accident or death
August 19, 2008

New guidance to inform companies about the procedures surrounding a fatal work accident is being published.
'Learning the lessons: how to respond to deaths at work and other serious incidents' is being released by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
Peter Brown, the head of the health and work division of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), says: "Fatal accident investigations are always very serious, may involve various enforcement authorities and can also be lengthy, inevitably raising fears and uncertainties within organisations."
The booklet intends to improve understanding of the procedures involved.
Ian Waldram, the chair of the working party who created the publication, said it is important to have a "pre-planned investigation arrangement" in place to help deal with a serious injury or fatality.
He says the booklet's intention is to make the situation less difficult to deal with and help maximise a company's chances of learning from an accident.
According to official statistics, there were 241 employees killed at work during 2006-07.
