Hospital backs slips, trips and falls campaign

March 23, 2009

Hospital backs slips, trips and falls campaign
A hospital in the east of England has pledged to support a campaign to reduce accidents through slips, trips and falls.

Norfolk and Norwich Hospital is backing the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE's) Shattered Lives initiative and ensuring its staff are protected from the consequences of such incidents, which may motivate those considering slips, trips and falls training.

Eddie Scoggins, principal HSE inspector, said: "It's great that staff at the hospital are backing the campaign and doing their bit to help get the message across."

Mr Scoggins also pointed out that slips or trips are responsible for more than half of accidents in the workplace, but some people are tempted to view them as comical incidents.

However, the expert said that slips, trips and falls can result in major injuries, disability, time away from work and even death.

Earlier this month, an East Midlands firm was fined £12,000 by Derby magistrates court, after a worker slipped on a wet mat while standing on a conveyor belt and was injured.
