HSE confirms costs to Lancashire economy
January 2, 2008

The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced details of the cost of illness and accidents to the economy of Lancashire.
According to estimations by the HSE, last year the Lancashire economy incurred costs of £300 million, as a consequence of accidents and illness.
"The cost and the statistics show the importance of relevant health and safety measures. The costs and loss of important staff can be crucial for smaller firms," said David Ashton, north-west regional director for the HSE.
"It seems I repeat myself in saying that year after year, the same underlying trends appear in our accidents statistics - and the tragedy is that deaths and injuries such as these could be avoided," he added.
As a way of reducing accident levels, the HSE recommends the implementation of a number of measures, including ensuring that ladders are adequately secured.
The HSE was established as a consequence of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
