HSE seeks to debunk misery myth
January 8, 2008

The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has sought to scotch the myth that each year it resolves to make the lives of business people miserable.
Announced as part of the organisation's myth of the month series, the HSE has confirmed that, contrary to expectations, a majority of senior directors, chief executives and employers considered the organisation to be helpful when asked.
From the results of the poll - taken when the aforementioned groups made contact with the HSE - it was found that 90 per cent view the organisation as helpful.
"Effective health and safety management clearly helps reduce the unacceptable toll of suffering that accidents and ill-health bring," said the HSE.
"Real-life case studies show how businesses have benefited from improving their management of health and safety," it added.
The same group of respondents confirmed a belief that health and safety regulations actually benefit their organisation.
A number of other myths have been highlighted by the HSE, including the idea that trapeze artists are required to wear hard hats.
