Slips and trips responsibility reminder for north-east businesses

Slips and trips responsibility reminder for north-east businesses
North-east businesses are being encouraged to help improve workplace safety by doing some spring cleaning.

Chris Gillies, principal inspector for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) North East, highlighted how the risk of slips, trips and falls can be reduced by taking some simple but effective measures.

These include clearing walkways for staff, removing obstacles, and tidying away trailing wires and cables. Adopting a sensible footwear policy fit for the purpose needed will also reduce risk of injury, as will keeping floors clean and dry.

However, cleaning must be performed safely for it to have a positive impact.

Mr Gillies, speaking as part of the HSE's "Shattered Lives" campaign, said that slips, trips and falls in the workplace cost the north-east region over £35 million in 2006-2007, with half of all trip accidents stemming from poor housekeeping.

Almost 11,000 workers in the UK suffered serious injury as a result of a slip or trip last year.
