Blasting Services wins in health and safety awards

Blasting Services and CEMEX UK were among the winning companies at the latest health and safety award ceremony for quarry operators.
At the QPA Health and Safety Best Practice Awards, the former took the Frank Davies Trophy for most outstanding health and safety performance while the latter won the John Crabbe Trophy, presented for overall excellence in health and safety.
Judith Hackitt, chair of the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) and keynote speaker praised the achievements of the quarry industry as a whole.
"Over the last few years the quarrying industry has demonstrated an impressive performance," she said.
"You have more than halved the accident rate within the sector and, by doing so, you have set anexample to others in your industry and to other sectors of what can be done," continued Ms Hackitt.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, the quarry industry fatality rate in June 2000 averaged three times that of the construction sector.
