School girl dies after being run over by waste collection vehicle
The waste industry has been told to ensure adequate health and safety precautions are in place after a school girl was killed by a reversing waste collection vehicle.

In 2006, 11 year-old Amy Robinson was on her way to school in Coventry when the incident occurred.

Coventry city council has been fined £125,000 and ordered to pay costs of £40,000 at Coventry Crown Court under section three of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act.

Paul Smith, HSE inspector, said: "There is a tragic history of pedestrians, particularly children and old people being run over by refuse collection vehicles."

He added that accidents like this should act as a stimulus to the industry to re-energise its approach to health and safety and take extra precautions when working.

According to the HSE, it is working in conjunction with the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) forum to produce standards for local authorities to adhere to.

Since April 2005 there have been six members of the public killed by reversing waste/ recycling collection vehicles whilst undertaking collection activities.
