Workplace deaths are a worry

Workplace deaths are a worry
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has claimed that the number of people injured at work every year is the equivalent to 20 jumbo jets full of people every day.

As Workers' Memorial Day approaches, Roger Bibbings, the occupational safety adviser for RoSPA, conceded that while work-related accidents had declined, a focus on the severity of accidents distracts from the overall figures, which are still unacceptable.

In addition, the society also claims that the equivalent of a jumbo-jet-load of passengers dies every two weeks, as a result of poor health and safety in the workplace.

Mr Bibbings said that people should not forget the importance of safety at work.

"If one jumbo jet crashed every two weeks killing all 400 people on board there would be a national outcry – and that is the rate at which workers are dying," he said.

The society also revealed that the number of sicknesses and injuries works out at 36 million lost working days.

RoSPA is a registered charity which promotes accident prevention in the workplace.
