Work-related stress 'on increase'
Instances of work-related stress are on the increase, it has been claimed.

According to data released by the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE), instances of work-related stress are rising, leading to the loss of almost 14 million working days in 2006.

"We need to make a conscious effort to tackle workplace stress … It cannot be eliminated, but must be managed with our workforces' wellbeing in mind," said Judith Hackitt, chairman of the Health and Safety Commission.

Lyn Ellis, health and safety advisor at the Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust added: "Good management practice is the key to the successful management of stress.

HSE figures show that for the period between 2005 and 2006, depression, anxiety and stress caused by work cost the country more than £530 million

A number of methods can be used to manage and reduce the symptoms of stress, including meditation, exercise and cognitive therapy.
