Company fined for lift shaft fall

Company fined for lift shaft fall
Lift manufacturers and maintenance firms should ensure that their employees are able to work at height safely, it has been said.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued its warning following an East Midlands firm being fined after a worker was injured when he fell 6.5 metres, which may concern those interested by working at height training.

Lincoln Magistrates Court fined the UK Lift Company of Blisworth, Northampton, £2,000 and ordered to it to pay costs of £8,000 after the firm admitted contravening the Work At Height Regulations 2005.

In February last year, Michael Richards, the company's assistant site manager, fell down North Kesteven School's lift shaft, leading to injuries such as a broken pelvis, fractures and ligament damage.

Judith McNulty-Green, HSE inspector, said the injuries sustained by Mr Richards were easily avoidable.

She commented: "Risks of this nature must be managed by carrying out a suitable risk assessment and implementing and enforcing the necessary control measures."

Last month, a partner of a south-east company was fined £5,000 after a worker broke both his wrists when he fell off a ladder.
