HSE to carry out inspection initiative

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to target poor performing sectors in the construction industry by beginning an inspection initiative in Sefton.
Scheduled for June 9th, the inspections will be unannounced and will focus on the refurbishment industry in the area.
According to the HSE, the sector accounts for 60 per cent of all construction accidents but makes up just 40 per cent of industry activity.
Health and safety inspector Susan Ritchie believes practical action needs to be taken to slash the number of accidents and fatalities suffered in construction.
"HSE workers are determined to protect workers by taking necessary action against those who continue to flout basic health and safety precautions. Such action could include closing sites and prosecuting those responsible," she said.
The inspections will focus on issues such as ensuring the risks of working at height are properly assessed, fire prevention measures are in place and sites are well organised, reducing the risk of slips, trips and falls.
Slips and trips cause over 1,000 injuries per year in the construction business, the HSE claims.
