Safe tree work targeted by HSE
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to highlight the dangers of tree working and to provide health and safety tips for contractors at a free event.

Happening in Buckinghamshire, the arboriculture "safety and health awareness day" (SHAD) is to be held today and is aimed at local councils and organisations which employ contractors.

David Head, HSE principal inspector for the area, said that working as an arborist takes great skill, extreme care and can be dangerous if health and safety laws are not adhered to.

"At the event there will be practical guidance on what to look for when appointing tree contractors and how they should deal with the risks, such as working at height and using chainsaws," he said.

According to the HSE, the day will feature subjects such as LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) examination reports, training records and AFAG (Arboriculture and Forestry Advisory Group) guidance.

Figures from the body show that there were 35 fatal injuries in the workplace during 2006-07.
